I lost my mother six years ago this month. The anniversary of our last meal together is Wednesday. It was her birthday. She ordered chopped liver at Mort’s Delicatessen in Tarzana, California. I miss her.
Regarding German immigrants leading the way in industry, the first half of this podcast actually helps connect another avenue of synchronicity between the cities: Germans impact on the garment industry. In Odesa, Germans were the main producers of wool, the second largest export for a large part of the 19th century. Here in Baltimore, the German Jewish population developed the garment industry. When Russian Jews started arriving in the 1880s in large numbers, many started out as tailors in those garment businesses. Fast forward to WWII and Israel Myers develops the company that will become London Fog right here in Baltimore.

I miss my mom too. Thank you for sharing this story. The last meal we had together was Wendy’s. Cheeseburgers, fries and frosties.
I love this substack! The Italians came a little later to Baltimore- most Italianate buildings were built by Germans

Hi Chris! Here's where I read about the first Italians showing up in the 1840s with larger numbers coming in later: https://americadomani.com/a-brief-history-of-italians-in-baltimore/
And yes, you're right that it wasn't Italians building the row homes.
There is also an interesting podcast from Baltimore National Heritage Area's A City of Immigrants series that you might like: https://www.explorebaltimore.org/city-history/a-city-of-immigrants
